Postdoc molecular plant breeding and phytopathology in onion
Wageningen University
Job description
Are you the enthusiastic post-doc with the skills and ambition to develop innovative molecular tools for the breeding of disease resistant onions? Do you want to use your passion to connect researchers and onion breeders to find answers to the challenges of the world in agriculture and healthy food? Then we might have an interesting opportunity for you in Plant Breeding, Wageningen University & Research!
Exploring natural genetic variation is key in Plant Breeding. Genomics and bio-informatics is playing an important role in the identification and exploration of variation for disease resistance in wild and onion-related Allium species. This can be through the analysis of resistance gene sequences in onion and compare them with those of two related Allium species, Allium roylei and A. fistulosum that contain resistance traits to Fusarium , Botrytis or Stemphylium , either through bio-informatic analyses of the available onion genome or the generation of new sequence data from resistance gene amplicons. These complementary approaches will generate an inventory of the absence/presence of resistance genes (or gene families) and of their allelic variation. Co-localization and association analyses of gene sequences emerging from these analyses will be performed with QTLs for resistance to Botrytis leaf blight and Fusarium basal rot that were identified in the past in an interspecific cross population obtained from a cross between A. cepa x F1( A. roylei x A. fistulosum ), in order to provide molecular markers for breeding programmes. In addition, transcript analyses of infected onion plants and (partially resistant) interspecific hybrids will be used to generate insight in resistance mechanisms.
You will work in close cooperation with colleagues in the departments of Plant Breeding and Phytopathology, and with PhD and MSc students, and breeding companies.
Requirements
We are looking for a scientist with a PhD in Bioinformatics, Plant Sciences, Plant Breeding or a related field. The successful candidate is highly motivated to develop a scientific career and can perform independent research, but values collaboration with PhD students and other researchers. The candidate is fluent in English and has good communication, scientific writing, and presentation skills.
The candidate should have several of the following qualifications:
Interest in translating biological challenges into bioinformatics solutions and vice versa.
Experience with genome assembly and annotation, haplotyping and/or Pangenomes
Extensive field and lab experience in working with onion
Good applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, Principal component analysis, etc.
Conditions of employment
Wageningen University & Research offers excellent terms of employment. A few highlights from our Collective Labour Agreement include:
working hours that can be discussed and arranged so that they allow for the best possible work-life balance;
the option to accrue additional compensation hours by working more, up to 40 hours per week;
sabbatical leave, study leave, and partially paid parental leave;
there is a strong focus on vitality and you can make use of the sports facilities available on campus for a small fee;
a fixed December bonus of 4%;
excellent pension scheme.
In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will of course receive a good salary. We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between 欧元3821 and 欧元5479 for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with the CLA Wageningen Research (scale 10-11) for a period of 3 years.
Wageningen University & Research encourages internal advancement opportunities and mobility with an internal recruitment policy. We are offering a multi-faceted position in an international environment with a pleasant and open working atmosphere.
Employer Wageningen University & Research
Wageningen University & Research The mission of Wageningen University & Research is "To explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life". Under the banner Wageningen University & Research, Wageningen University and the specialised research institutes of the Wageningen Research Foundation have joined forces in contributing to finding solutions to important questions in the domain of healthy food and living environment. With its roughly 30 branches, 7,200 employees (6,400 fte) and 13,200 students and over 150.000 participants to WUR's Life Long Learning, Wageningen University & Research is one of the leading organisations in its domain. The unique Wageningen approach lies in its integrated approach to issues and the collaboration between different disciplines.
Plant Breeding is a merged unit of Wageningen Research and Wageningen University with around 200 people including MSc and PhD students and guest workers. It is a highly international group with more than 30 nationalities organised in ten research groups. We conduct fundamental, strategic and applied research and provide teaching at all educational (BSc, MSc and PhD) levels. Our research focusses on the dissemination of the genetic basis of traits which are relevant in order to achieve a sustainable agri- and horticulture. We conduct this research often together or in partnership with breeding companies, local, regional and state governments.
