Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

We are seeking to hire a motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral scientist to join the Laboratory of Musculoskeletal Research at the Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky. Our translational research program is led by Bruno Menarim, DVM, PhD and James MacLeod, VMD, PhD. The research program that supports this position focuses on innate immunity in orthopedics, specifically on macrophage-mediated joint homeostasis, inflammation resolution and osteochondral repair. More broadly, we are a translational biomedical research laboratory studying molecular and cellular mechanism of joint biology, rheumatic disease pathobiology, and the repair of synovial tissues . A primary area of investigation centers on how resident and myeloid macrophages affect recovery of joint homeostasis following sterile and infective inflammation, as well as osteochondral repair. We are currently studying mechanisms and mediators of inflammation resolution recently uncovered through transcriptome studies, including potential therapeutic targets for rheumatic conditions. In summary, we focus on cutting edge technologies (functional genomics & lipidomics) and innovative in vitro and in vivo models to better understand the biology of macrophages during health, disease, and recovery of homeostasis in synovial joints. The translational objective is to develop novel therapies for both acute and chronic synovial joint diseases. Our experimental systems are primarily centered in horses and equine cells, recognizing horses as an important patient population as well as an established translational model for human orthopedics and sports medicine. This position will involve scientific collaborations with other laboratories within the Gluck Center, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery in the College of Medicine, campus-wide precision medicine initiatives, and stakeholders of the Kentucky horse industry.
